Lagos Isese Day 2025: Governor Sanwo-Olu declares August 20 a work-free day for public servants to honor Yoruba culture and traditions

The Lagos Isese Day 2025 celebration has been declared a work-free day for public servants by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

According to a circular signed by the Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, on August 18, government offices across ministries, parastatals, agencies, and local councils will close on Wednesday, August 20, to mark the annual Yoruba cultural holiday.

Work will resume on Thursday, August 21, at 8:00 a.m.

The statement emphasized the Lagos State government’s commitment to preserving indigenous traditions and supporting traditional institutions.

“In reaffirming the commitment of the State Government towards promoting our indigenous culture, tradition and preserving our heritage, Mr. Governor has declared Wednesday, 20th August, 2025 as Work-Free Day,” the circular read.

Isese Day is dedicated to celebrating Yoruba spirituality and heritage. In recent years, Lagos has formally recognized the day to foster inclusivity and cultural pride among its diverse population.

The holiday reflects the state’s policy of preserving Yoruba heritage while respecting the values of traditional communities.
