Now in its 22nd edition, the festival is being strategically leveraged by the Ogun State Government as a tool for cultural rebranding and diplomatic engagement.

During a press briefing, Mr. Dare Odufowokan, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Public Communications, said the state sees the event as a golden opportunity to reintroduce Ogun’s unique cultural identity to the rest of Nigeria.

He highlighted the importance of themes such as hospitality, historical pride, and communal unity as key elements of the ongoing campaign to reposition Ogun on the national stage.

According to Odufowokan, the current administration believes that sports can serve as a catalyst for cultural revival and tourism growth. “We want Nigerians to experience not just the energy of sports but the richness of our values and our history,” he said.

He called on the media to actively promote this dimension of the festival, urging journalists to highlight the interplay between competition, community, and culture.

His remarks were reinforced by Adekunle Solaja, Chairman of the Media Sub-Committee for the festival. Solaja praised the initiative, noting that the sports festival is a rare convergence of youth engagement, athleticism, and identity building.

He encouraged reporters to go beyond the medal tables and explore the deeper narrative being written in Abeokuta. “The festival is not only a celebration of sports but also a powerful platform for advancing Ogun’s soft power,” he stated.

As athletes from across Nigeria converge in Abeokuta for the games, cultural exhibitions, local cuisines, music performances, and historic tours are taking place alongside the sporting fixtures.

This layered experience is part of the state’s vision to turn the festival into a lasting symbol of Ogun’s contribution to Nigeria’s heritage and progress.

The government’s strategy is drawing positive reactions from tourism experts and cultural stakeholders who argue that merging sports and tourism is a forward-looking model. They believe that such initiatives can reposition Ogun as a premier destination for both leisure and investment.

With the 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival underway, Ogun State is not only hosting athletes but also telling a story of legacy, resilience, and pride.
