Makinwa shared the story during a recent episode of her Toke Moments podcast, where she hosted reality television personality Beauty Tukura and reflected on lessons from her past relationships.

The media personality explained that her decision was shaped by an experience she had as an undergraduate while dating an older man. She said she spent money meant for her university expenses to organise an elaborate birthday celebration for him, only to later discover that he was allegedly involved with another woman.

“I stopped buying men gifts after I dated a man who was 10 years older than me. I spent my university semester’s school fees to celebrate his birthday and took him to an Italian restaurant in Victoria Island,” Makinwa said.

She recalled that the experience was deeply upsetting after she discovered another woman at his home following the celebration.

“He ordered everything on the menu. When we got home… there was another woman in his house. That broke me,” she said.

Makinwa said the incident changed her perspective on relationships and personal boundaries, particularly around making significant sacrifices for romantic partners.

The actress and broadcaster, known for her work in Nigerian entertainment and lifestyle media, has frequently discussed personal growth, relationships and life experiences on her podcast and public platforms.
